Why Co Sleeping and Breastfeeding Go Together So Well

There are many reasons why parents may choose to breastfeed. Maybe they’ve heard about the many benefits of breastfeeding (like giving baby better protection against short and long-term illness)or read one of the academic studies that explores how breastfeeding supports both maternal and infant health

Perhaps they’ve even read the stats about how breastfeeding can save parents between $1,200-1,500 in their baby’s first year.

Regardless of why they make the decision, around three out of four mothers in the U.S. choose breastfeeding over buying formula. And many of those families take advantage of the co sleeping and breastfeeding connection to make nighttime nursing easier.

While breastfeeding may not be an option for every mother or family, co sleeping can positively support baby health while making it easier for parents to get a night of good rest.

The Convenience of Co Sleeping Cribs

Newborn babies have a schedule all their own. It takes time for your baby to develop a healthy circadian rhythm (the internal clock that helps us stay awake when the sun is up and get rest when the sun goes down). After spending so long in the womb, your baby is not exactly accustomed to the changes of day and night, which makes it challenging for them to stay asleep for long stretches of time.

Not only that, their tiny tummies can’t hold much food. Your baby will double their weight in the first 5 months of life, and that kind of quick growth requires plenty of nutrients. This is why your baby may call for food every few hours when they’re first born.

Together, the combo of a tiny tummy and an undeveloped circadian rhythm can lead breastfed babies to stay up all night–while their parents stay up with them.

When breastfeeding mothers are getting sweet sleep with the help of a co sleeper or bedside crib, they don’t even need to get out of the comfort of their bed to care for their baby’s needs. While breastfeeding mothers who are not relying on a co sleeper may need to groggily get out of bed every two to four hours, co sleepers allow you to stay relaxed and comfortable while offering your baby the nurturing and nutrients they need.

And while getting out of bed and reaching over crib bars might not sound like too much of an inconvenience, having to make the trip multiple times throughout the night can easily leave nighttime feeding feeling like a chore. Co sleepers make it easier to care for your breastfed babies during the night, while waking up more comfortable and rested in the morning.

Co Sleeping and Breastfeeding Lying Down

Breastfeeding lying down can be a tricky position for new moms to learn, but it can also be one of the most comfortable ways to feed your baby at night.

Lying down can make the breastfeeding experience more relaxing for you, and it can be a way to minimize sleep disruption when you need to feed your baby at night.

Some experts even believe that this position helps babies nurse better because there’s less pressure on the baby’s neck and head. During the first months of life, it can also help a fussy baby get a good latch by calming them down and putting them in a better position.

For many parents, breastfeeding a newborn at night means waking up, walking around, and finding ways to wake up their body enough that they’ll be able to support baby health without succumbing to exhaustion and lying back down.

And while this can help the breastfeeding mother feel awake enough to breastfeed their baby comfortably, it can be hard to lie back down and get back to sweet sleep after spending so much energy becoming alert.

When using a co sleeping baby bed to remain comfortable while breastfeeding lying down, you’re able to remain in a restful state while feeding your little one, which makes it easier to get back to sleep once the time comes. This helps parents get more sleep during the night by making it easier to transition between being awake and falling back asleep.

A Big Co Sleeping Benefit: Better Nights of Rest

Though there are many co sleeping benefits to enjoy (including a boosted immune system and better bonding between you and baby), the more restful nights of sleep that both you and your baby enjoy are a big plus.

When you sleep no more than an arm’s reach from your baby, you’re able to respond to every one of their nighttime needs—including their hunger calls—easily, and without needing to fully get out of bed to do it.

That means you and your baby get to take advantage of all the benefits of breastfeeding, without struggling to get sweet sleep while nighttime feeding.

That’s one of the main reasons why co sleeping and breastfeeding go together so well. You’re able to give your baby everything they need during the night, while also giving your body the rest and relaxation you need as a parent.

How to Make Your Babybay Bedside Crib Mobile

It’s no secret that bedside cribs and co sleepers offer a host of benefits, while helping the whole family get more restful nights of sleep. (Like making nighttime nursing easy and giving baby a healthy psychological and physiological development jumpstart —just to name a few of our faves!)

But you can enjoy an even bigger benefit boost by choosing a bedside co sleeper that isn’t just safe and supportive for your little one, but is versatile as well.

Because when your bedside crib can easily transform into a portable bassinet, you have even more flexibility when it comes to choosing how you’ll nurture your baby during their sleeping and waking hours—while making things easier on you.

The Pros of Using a Portable Bassinet

A portable bassinet, a bedside crib, a bedside co sleeper: there are plenty of options out there when it comes to choosing a place for your baby to rest their head and catch some Z’s.

But when it comes time to choose which will work best for your family, finding one that matches your lifestyle needs—as well as the needs of your little one—is key.

You Can Make Your Bedside Crib Moveable

Though some families might decide that choosing a baby co sleeper that securely attaches to their own bed might offer everything they need, others may find that choosing a more moveable option (like a wooden bassinet or bedside crib) is better for them.

For parents who have a nursery space that they’re hoping to move baby into when the time eventually comes to transition from co sleeping, having a bassinet with wheels lets them roll baby back and forth between rooms, helping baby become well-accustomed to both.

A bassinet with wheels also allows you to move your baby to new rooms in the house without waking them.

This can be a much-needed feature for families who want to keep baby close throughout the day without needing to rely on a baby monitor, stock up on extra products, or feel confined to the bedroom to do it.

Your Baby Bassinet Makes It Easier to Offer Comfort

A baby bassinet for bed is also perfect for families who find that their baby prefers to be rocked or swayed to keep calm throughout the night.

Without needing to leave the comfort of your covers, you can easily reach over and comfort your baby with a rocking motion by gently moving your baby’s portable bassinet back and forth.

Meaning you’ll be able to keep resting, even as you give your little one the kind of comfort that lets them happily drift back to dreamland!

Your Wooden Bassinet Will Keep Your Baby Cocooned

Your baby has just spent 9 months in the womb. And though they might be excited to have all the adventures the world has to offer, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be a transition period when they experience a little discomfort while getting used to their new environment.

Traditional cribs are big. And while this might sound like a good thing at first (it gives my baby plenty of room to grow, right??), having too much extra space can be disorienting for some babies.

But when you convert your babybay co sleeper, into a wooden bassinet, you’re able to enjoy all the advantages of a bassinet or crib—while making it easier for your baby to sleep happily in the more familiar and comforting embrace of a smaller sleeping space.

All babybay co sleepers (including ones that have been transformed into a portable bassinet) are artfully designed to mimic the half-moon embrace of a hug (a shape your baby will be all-too-familiar with after growing in the womb).

So while your baby is soaking up all the new things the world has to offer, they’ll feel fully loved and embraced in comfort while doing it.

How to Turn Your babybay Bedside Co Sleeper Into a Portable Bassinet

The bassinet conversion kit makes it easy to turn your babybay co sleeper into a bedside crib or wooden bassinet with wheels.

All it takes is a few minutes to install the guard rail, and you have a safe way to move your baby’s sleeping space around the house with ease.

Your baby’s co sleeper mattress is fully height-adjustable, which makes it easy to line up their sleeping space to the height of your own bed and reach over to care for them during the night—without having to leave the comfort of your sheets.

And though our uniquely-designed guard rail is made to keep you comfortable as you care for your baby, that doesn’t mean that it’s not equally comfortable and safe for your little one!

They’ll feel snuggled in a sleeping space made-just-for-them, protected by a guard rail that will keep them safe through all sleeping and waking hours.

Get more sleep with the baby bassinet by babybay.babybay baby chick review

Your nighttime routine with a newborn can feel like a merry-go-round. As you adjust to spending normal sleeping hours rotating between, getting up to soothe, nurse, and return them to their crib every 2-3 hours, you’re using up the energy you’d rather save for the special moments. The babybay Bedside Co-sleeper is the perfect solution — especially in the early months, when baby is just so needy. (Because sleep, who needs that?) This European company has transformed the way we think about co-sleeping, and we love that their bassinet and mattress pads meet the top safety standards, both internationally, and domestically. We also love babybay’s dedication to sustainability — for every beechwood tree used to make your bedside co-sleeper, they plant another! And, all of their products are non-toxic, never using harmful plastics or glues, in any of their products. The chic, modern design is an added bonus.

With it’s half-moon shape (designed to mimic a hug), the babybay is also the perfect solution to nighttime separation anxiety — your touch is only a hand’s reach away. I have literally spent a night (or ten) holding hands with baby. But I know she is in her own safe space, and that helps me sleep sounder. You know, until she wakes me up to nurse (again) . . .

Growing with babybay

Safe and Secure Bedside Cosleeping

The initial purpose of the babybay is to be used as a bedside cosleeper. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends room-sharing for the first 6 months with a separate sleep space for the baby. Our unique design makes babybay the perfect bedside option for parents looking to safely keep their little one in the same room.  That’s where babybay comes in! The locking straps keep the babybay securely attached to the bedside. This sleeping arrangement can be especially helpful for a quick response to nighttime wakings and breastfeeding without the risks of keeping your baby in your bed. You can read more about the AAP safe sleep recommendations here.

Easy Access and Convenient Bassinnet

Even if you don’t need a bedside option, the bassinet conversion kit allows the babybay to be used in any room of the house. Adding the rolling casters allows the babybay bassinet to roll from room to room as needed. The space-saving design easily fits through doorways and easily finds a useful place in any room as needed. This can be especially handy for parents working at home or in smaller homes with multi-use spaces. The open design allows the babybay to be used as a changing space as well. Having multi-use items is important to keep your space simple and organized.

Growing Up

We have exciting news coming soon about another transition that will allow the babybay line to transform into a full-size crib. While we can’t give a specific date yet, this option will be available in the US in the near future!

Toddler Time

As your little one becomes more independent the babybay easily transitions into a comfortable space for young children. Adjusting the sleep space to a low-level makes a lovely bench space for a toddler. Baskets of toys or books easily slide under the platform to make a self-contained area. The comfortable mattress and a few pillows or stuffed animals make for a comfortable snuggle space for looking at picture books or playing with toys. This could be a special corner in the nursery or as a small space in the living room where they can be comfortable and play independently.

Easy Entry Way

Making a small space for your children with their items organized within their reach can be a great way to promote independence. Hanging hooks for jackets, gloves, and shoes tucked underneath makes for a cute a functional entryway addition. This especially true if you’re working on a Montessori-ish style approach! Dr. Maria Montessori coined the term “prepared environment” to describe orderly, child-friendly spaces that encourage confidence and independence. Preparing a space for your child with the babybay as a bench makes for an inviting and useful space to allow them easily locate their items and to practice their decision-making for leaving the house in an easy and less stressful way.

Imaginative Play Space

Adjusting your babybay to a height of 14-18 inches can make an ideal play platform for imaginative play scenes. A draped play silk makes for a blue sky background for a nature scene, a grey mountain background for a scene of animals, or even roleplaying through one of their favorite stories. This can be an engaging space for your toddler to get acquainted with shapes, colors, textures at an easy-to-access height ready to catch your child’s attention at curiosity at eye-level.

Desk Space

This useful adaptation has become very important during COVID-19 and a large number of children being required to attend classes through distance learning. One of the best ways to support our children through this challenging situation is to provide them with their own dedicated space to engage with their learning. While the learning space could be as simple as the kitchen table, setting up the babybay as a dedicated desk for a child makes for a simple solution and gives a child a distraction-free area. Many desks and tables are made for adult proportions so the ability to adjust the height of your babybay to a comfortable and ergonomic level for your child can decrease strain on their arms, wrists, or posture from sitting at improper heights or working at the wrong surface level. Hanging artwork or other study materials on the sides makes for an organized and personalized space.

Years of Use

The babybay is absolutely more than just a bedside cosleeper! We’re always seeing new and innovative ways parents are using our products in their households throughout the years. You can see more of these extended uses on our social media pages or send us a message for some tips and ideas 🙂
